Dave Salvaterra Fund for Audubon Elementary
Dave Salvaterra believed in the inherent dignity of children, and that all children deserve to have caring adults in their lives. He embodied that belief in the way he was a father to his children, and in the way he volunteered his time. Throughout his career at Loras College he volunteered at Audubon Elementary, acting as a regular presence in the lives of children there, some of whom did not have much in their lives that was regular. He contributed to a rich partnership between Loras and Audubon, and, in the words of one stakeholder at Audubon, “made miracles happen.”
This fund supports Dave’s vision for elementary schools as a place where children are seen, are celebrated, and thrive, by increasing investment in Audubon Elementary’s programming.
KIM BECKER TEACHER APPRECIATION ENDOWMENT FUND
Kim Becker was a teacher in the Dubuque area for many years! She retired from Kennedy Elementary school and her family wants to ensure that Kim’s passion and excitement for teaching can be carried on in the elementary classrooms of the Dubuque Community School District. This endowed fund will go towards classroom supplies for elementary teachers. Teacher will be able to fill out a short application at the beginning of each trimester and request up to $75 to spend in their classrooms. This is their way of continuing to honor the work that Kim did with students during her 40 years teaching in the classroom.
Lesley A. Stephens Endowed Fund to Support Students with Disabilities in the Dubuque Community School District
We lost such a precious gem June 23, 2020, when Lesley passed away unexpectedly. Lesley Stephen’s exceptional leadership with the Dubuque Community School District spanned 36 years. Without exception, wherever Ms. Stephens served in the District, she brought educational excellence and complete focus on the highest quality programming possible for students and staff. She began as a district-level reading consultant; moved on to being a learning resource center teacher; and ultimately led as an outstanding principal of a succession of elementary schools: Franklin School, Anne Sullivan School, Helen Keller School, and Bryant Elementary School.

Tenacity, innovation, creativity, compassion, determination, persistence, and devotion characterized her career as Lesley worked, unwavering, for the education of children all children. Lesley was the administrator who brilliantly pioneered Dubuque’s development of critical school and district programming for students with moderate and severe disabilities. That new view of education for students with disabilities opened doors of opportunity and inclusion that had not previously been opened profound changes that re-shaped student programing! Lesley’s educational sphere of influence then expanded to Bryant Elementary School. While principal at Bryant, she also pioneered the teaching and learning design of Expeditionary Learning Outward Bound. Bryant was one of Dubuque’s groundbreaking Expeditionary Learning schools when that teaching and learning school improvement model was just starting to emerge across the country. In fact, children, no matter who, and their families, the school staff, our community, and beyond were indeed blessed to experience the passionate advocacy and outstanding leadership provided by Lesley Stephens.
Thank you for your contribution to the Lesley A. Stephens Endowed Fund. Your donation will continue the work Lesley began by providing support to students with disabilities through annual grants to directly benefit students with special equipment needs, personal needs, and/or programming needs.

FDPS Field Trip Fund
Our most requested program in the Dubuque Community Schools are field trips! Remember the excitement of leaving school to take what you learned into the classroom, out? Either at a local nature preserve, theater, park, or tour? Because of our community of partners and donations to this fund, we are able to send students on Outdoor Adventures, as part of the Science curriculum, provide a grade level each year with an experience at the theater, and give students the opportunity to explore local gems like the National Mississippi River Museum, Mines of Spain, EB Lyons, John Deere Proving Ground, Grand Opera House, UD’s Heritage Center, and so much more. Your gift goes directly to transportation and ticket costs to get EVERY student in that grade level out on a field experience.
Falb Kendall Hunt Instrumental Music Fund
Inspired by the trumpet and the love of music, for the last 15 years this fund has invested in students engaged with the music programs in the Dubuque Community School District.
Since 2020, more than 150 instruments have been purchased for students in the Dubuque Community School District, ensuring that any student who wants to explore a love of music can do so, regardless of their ability to rent or buy an instrument. Thanks to this fund, participation in band and orchestra has grown each year, along with access to the instruments students need to succeed.
John W. Seier Memorial Fund
The purpose of the John W. Seier Memorial Fund is to impact students of Dubuque Community School District, by providing support to students that participate in Scouting. FDPS Grants and Gifts Fund
FDPS Gifts and Grants funds go towards projects and programs that are not funded by general tax dollars. Some of these dollars go towards Building Grants, school principals apply for, while some go towards areas of interest for each of our partners/donors. Your gifts have funded new technology in the classroom, classroom sets of headphones to use for testing, literacy, and to create a quiet environment that may be needed, your gifts have made schools safer with the purchase of building-wide walkie-talkie’s, your gifts have motivated students to improve their attendance through individual attendance calendars, stickers, and student incentives, and your gifts have even helped plan school family engagement nights. Every gift you give impacts students directly.
FDPS Open Closet Fund
The Open Closet Fund pays for food for the Dubuque Community Schools Food Pantry, personal hygiene items for the Care Closet, and clothing items, such as winter coats, boots, and pants. In the 2024 school year, there were over 2500 visits to this space, with the top needs being food and household cleaning supplies. In addition to being open for families, school staff will pack up items for individual families and/or classroom closets, to ensure accessibility to all. Your gift directly goes towards the purchase of items, most in need. Also, thanks to partnerships with As They Grow, The Discover Shop, Shoe Shack, and many more individuals in the community, many items come to us gently used and ready for students and their families!
